ZERO The End of Prostate Cancer (www.zerocancer.org) and Veterans Prostate Cancer Awareness (VPCa) (www.vetsprostate.org) have partnered to educate Veterans and raise awareness about their risk of prostate cancer.
We have developed a short 10-minute survey we are asking you to distribute to your membership. This Veterans Prostate Cancer survey can be found at www.zerocancer.org/vetssurvey and is intended to be an informal assessment that seeks to gain insight on the prevalence of the disease and other cancers among the Veteran population. The simple introductory survey results will be made available to your organization and we will provide you any additional information you require. Prostate Cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer within the VA system with over 13,000 cases a year diagnosed. Today there are over 489,000 men living with the disease within the VA system and over 16,000 with an advanced metastatic form or the disease.
Recent studies and investigations are reporting through a number of articles a higher than normal prevalence of cancer among Veterans. We are contacting you as your organization has a membership that consists primarily of Veterans who should be aware of screening recommendations and disease risk.
It is suspected that the Veteran population is at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer due to exposure to hazardous materials and job-related exposures. Furthermore, the aviation community may have an even higher incidence rate than the general Veteran population.
With your assistance and the data collected in this survey, we will work to reach Veterans receiving care through the Veterans Health Administration, TRICARE, or through their own personal insurance coverage.
We are asking that Veterans complete this simple, 10-minute anonymous survey which will help us collect a population incidence rate estimate and insights into how many Veterans have a cancer diagnosis and how many are aviators.
Please let us know if you are willing to join our efforts by publishing the attached link to our Veterans Prostate Cancer survey. Additionally, we would welcome the opportunity to work with your organization to publish an editorial or articles regarding the high incidence rate of prostate cancer being diagnosed in the Veteran population as well as general mens health information.
